Power to the Patient

Audio

Dr. Paul Thomas is reshaping access to healthcare in the City of Detroit.

After medical school, Dr. Thomas left the traditional insurance-based healthcare system determined to build a patient-first model centered on transparency, trust, and long-term relationships. We discuss the real challenges facing urban healthcare, how Plum Health serves a diverse Detroit community, and why momentum around Direct Primary Care is growing nationwide.

Dr. Thomas’s practice shows what can happen when healthcare is treated not just as a service, but as a foundation for community vitality and economic stability.

  1. Great discussion! Huge kudos to Dr. Paul Thomas on taking the risk to open his own clinic believing on his thesis of a member-supported network. It is fascinating how we can get costs down and service quality up in healthcare once incentives are properly aligned – and intermediaries removed. Hoping more businesses like that!

    1. Thanks for saying so! We are focusing on taking great care of our patients, and we know that larger groups (businesses, non-profits, school districts, and municipalities) will want to engage with our service more and more as we continue to scale and deliver excellent care and service. By doing this, we hope to continue to drive down costs and improve access.
